Meet Our Team

Our team is made up of experts from across the United States.

Dr. Joan Cook is a clinical psychologist and Associate Professor in the Yale School of Medicine. She has worked clinically with a range of trauma survivors, including combat veterans and former prisoners of war, men and women who have been physically and sexually assaulted in childhood and adulthood, and survivors of the 2001 terrorist attack on the former World Trade Center.  She has served as the principal investigator on seven federally-funded grants, was a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) Guideline Development Panel for the Treatment of PTSD and the 2016 President of APA’s Division of Trauma Psychology. Joan and her husband have three children, 2 dogs and a fish.

Dr. Amy Ellis is currently the Assistant Director of the Trauma Resolution and Integration Program (TRIP) at Nova Southeastern University. There she supervises doctoral-level practicum students in their rotation at a community mental health center clinic focused on treating survivors of complex trauma. Her current research interests focus on trauma in underserved populations, namely male sexual abuse survivors, and both micro and macro traumas that affect individuals identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community. In addition to her work at TRIP and in her private practice, Amy enjoys spending time with her two beautiful dogs, Millicent and Ronald.

Dr. Steve Martino specializes in the treatment of addictive disorders and of patients diagnosed with co-occurring psychiatric problems, with specific interests in motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, group work, use of brief interventions in medical settings, and clinical supervision. His current research focuses on strategies for disseminating and implementing empirically supported treatments in community treatment programs and medical settings. Dr. Martino is a Professor of Psychology in the Yale Department of Psychiatry and the Chief of Psychology at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System.

Dr. Joel Marc Filmore is a nationally-known professional counselor, educator, researcher, author, trainer, and public speaker. He has been core faculty member at numerous institutions where he teaches graduate counseling courses including LGBTQQI issues, multiculturalism, trauma & abuse, sex-trafficking, sex offender issues, as well as addictions/substance abuse. Growing up in a rural farm town, Dr. Filmore suffered through abuse at home and intolerance from his community. He ran away from home as a teenager and ultimately came to Chicago looking for acceptance and a new life.

Dr. Vanessa Simiola is a licensed clinical psychologist and Research Associate at Kaiser Permanente's Center for Integrate Health Care Research in Honolulu, Hawaii. She has been working with Dr. Joan Cook for over 7 years on several research projects related to traumatic stress studies. She is particularly interested in understanding patient preferences for trauma treatment. Dr. Simiola maintains a small clinical practice, helping veterans and civilians in their recovery from traumatic experiences. She enjoys spending time with her husband, kids and two dogs at the beaches in Hawaii.

Dr. Chyrell Bellamy is an Associate Professor of Yale School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry, Program for Recovery and Community Health (PRCH) and serves as the Director of Peer Services/ Research. Dr Bellamy is also the Acting Director of the Office of Recovery Community Affairs, appointed by the Commissioner of the Department of Mental Health and Addictions Services. She has experience as a frontline service provider, community educator and organizer, and as a community and academic researcher. Dr Bellamy’s expertise includes developing and conducting community-based interventions and research initiatives; and, involving and partnering with community, specifically with people living with mental illness, addictions, trauma, and HIV. Her research examines sociocultural experiences and pathways to recovery in prevention and treatment. 


Peer Leaders

Our team of 20+ Peer Leaders from all across the U.S. and Canada who are volunteering their time, shared experience, and wisdom to run the 6-week online intervention groups.
